Newly Weds Speak On Cross-Cultural Relations

Do long-distance relationships really work?

WITH HANS & TINA DOSSCHE

Q: What are your comments about having a relationship with someone from another country?

A: For us, we’re both brought up from the western society so our mentality is pretty much the same. American culture versus Belgian is slightly different. However we have no major problems there between the two of us. The only major topic we mainly discuss is “where” to live and “raise” our family. Is it US or Belgium, which one is better and offers more? The compromise we have is that we live and work in the US until our children are 5 years old and then we’ll move back to Belgium.

Q: Do you find the communication more difficult because you two live in different countries?

A: We basically have no misunderstanding about what one wants and expects. Every relationship is complex in its own. The best is to be honest up front about our expectations and what we want from the relationship. By doing this resolves lots of unwanted surprises and we know what exactly we get ourselves into and not to mention it saves time, energies & resources if knowing what each person’s expectations are from the very beginning. iT!
