TWW’s Festive-Food Survival Tips

Avoid packing on the pounds this holiday season

BY LINDA O’BYRNE

The Christmas season is packed with social events that usually involve copious amounts of food and drink, not to mention the Christmas Day feast. These five tips can stop you from packing on the pounds over the holiday period.

DON’T SKIP MEALS
If you’re attending a party later in the day, or it’s Christmas day and you’re awaiting the big feast, don’t be tempted to starve yourself all day and ‘save up’ calories. Keeping on a regular schedule prevents you from getting overhungry which leads to making unhealthier choices than you normally would (and more of them!). Skipping meals will negatively impact your metabolism and backfire in the long run.

DON’T EAT FOR EATING’S SAKE
Just because your aunt Martha made pumpkin pie, don’t feel obliged to eat a slice if it’s not your favorite. You can eat sensibly by sticking to only ‘treat’ foods that you really enjoy and not feeling the urge to splurge on every dish unnecessarily.

BE CONSCIOUS OF WHAT YOU DRINK
Most holiday celebrations involve alcohol but make wise choices to avoid packing on the pounds. Just one cup of eggnog can pack over 300 calories, whereas a light beer is only 100 calories at most. Even better, sip water and save your calories for the foods that you really want.

EXERCISE PORTION CONTROL
If you can’t choose which of the delicious foods are your favorite (as they all are!) then take a little of each dish. Candied yams may be dripping in calories but if you just take a small scoop then you’re less likely to feel deprived, or put on weight.

STICK TO ONE SERVING
Just because it’s Christmas don’t think that this gives you an excuse to go back for second—or even third—servings. Once you’ve cleared your first plate, clear it away and pop some sugar-free gum to prevent you from giving in to temptation. iT!
