With Christmas rolling nearer, it also brings to mind the possibilities of New Years’ celebrations. When? Where? With whom? This year if you find yourself in Canada, consider checking out one of the many annual celebrations that are abundant across the country.
TORONTO
If you’re in the provincial capital at all this season, always stop by

Nathan Phillip's Square (John Vetterli)
for some skating. Every year for the month of December, the Square is the home of the Cavalcade of Lights. On New Years’ Eve, the event continues with live performances and a spectacle of lighted displays.
If a fancier crowd is what you’re looking for, the Royal Ontario Museum is offering a gala event inside the new Crystal Room.
For the dancers:

If you’re the sporty type, or are looking for family fun, check out Bromont, a ski resort an hour outside of the city. Spend New Years’ Eve on the slopes–it’s open until late on December 31st and early on January 1, 2009.

The Montreal Bar Hop – this cheaper option gets you a bracelet and access to 20 clubs around the city. Also includes shuttle service between all featured clubs.
NIAGARA FALLS
Those who come here for New Year’s Eve, then go to Clifton Hill! The New Year’s Eve Bash begins at 8pm with fireworks at 9. This year’s concert features Roger Hodgson of Supertramp and the one and only Kim Mitchell–you remember that old ’80s hit, “Patio Lanterns.” There’s also the Festival of Lights running through till January 5–so don’t miss out. And for those of you of age, don’t forget about the Fallsview Casino, located within walking distance of the Clifton Hill festivities!
OTTAWA
New Year’s in the nation’s capital is always an adventure. There are a wealth of activities happening–from the pubs in the Byward Market to the over 70 sites of dazzling Christmas lights.
If you are here before New Year’s Eve, stop by Parliament from December 26th to the 30th when the public is invited inside the decorated Centre Block. The view from the Peace Tower is breathtaking.
