Does Travel Change After Marriage

The question is… will I still be able to travel?

BY PAUL WADE

When you’re reading this, I’m in the United Kingdom experiencing Europe for the first time. I call my trip to the UK my last surah to bachelor hood. Of course, travel is going to be around for the rest of my life–I hope.

At the moment, I try to make it a priority to visit one destination a year. In 2006, I returned from living in Taiwan. In 2007, I went on my first missions trip to Cape Breton and this year, I’m wandering to the UK. Right now, I can go at leisure with no strings attached.

But next year, I take the greatest trip–marriage. I’m marrying the most wonderful woman in the world, but I know my carefree wandering days are over. Priorities change and another person has to be taken into consideration. There are also more expenses. As a married couple, you get a mortgage, buy a new car, and build your new nest-egg with furniture, all of which takes time and money.

I consider myself lucky to be in a profession that allows me the liberty of traveling for business–thank god for The Weekly Wanderer.

My fiancé has reminded me time and time again that she won’t stop me from travel–together or separate). Besides, she’s a Stratford Festival nut, who loves her annual dose of Shakespeare. I’m certainly not standing in the way of that.

But as much as we support each other’s hobbies, reality rules. Everyday expenses are priority and if the dime isn’t there, then the wanders can’t happen. Wait until you hear about our honeymoon–Italy all the way, baby. Speaking of which–wait, until kids enter the picture, but that’s another story for another time. iT!
