Braving U.S. Customs

The right ID makes crossing the border easier and hassle-free.

Greetings Wanderers! Spring has sprung in most places and the urge to spread our wings and explore is upon us. In the midst of planning and packing, take a moment to scan the latest in border-crossing requirements to make sure you’re ready. Here are tips from the Canada Border Services Agency, so getting across the border becomes easy and hassle free.

TAKING FLIGHT
If you’re traveling into the U.S, don’t forget your passport. For frequent wanders, presenting passports at customs is habit, however, frequent travelers to the U.S. used to be able to get into the U.S. without a passport. Now, it’s required to have one.

Another option to cross the U.S. border almost hassle free is to present a NEXUS card. NEXUS is a program that makes crossing the border faster for low risk, pre-approved travelers. An application process is required before crossing.

WANDERING BY LAND OR BY SEA
Travel by land and sea is a lot easier, but the rules are right now in a frequent state of flux. On January 31, 2008, Canada Border Services Agency changed the rules for Canadian citizens crossing the U.S. border.

Unlike flying by air, a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license AND a birth certificate or a citizenship card or a valid Canadian passport are good enough for clearance. Fast and easy clearance cards such as NEXUS Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card are also valid. If you’re traveling with someone under 18, a proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate) is required.

Don’t get too comfortable because on June 1, 2009, the rules for land and sea dwellers change again. Canadian citizens will be required to present a valid passport, a NEXUS card, or a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card to gain access.

Check TWW or the Canada Borders Service Agency website often for any further updates. Also, keep in mind that most passport renewals can take up to six to eight weeks to process if you do it by mail, and two weeks if done in person. Don’t procrastinate and happy trails! IT!
