Most countries allow you to travel or live abroad, as long as there is more than six months of expiry time on your passport–but what happens when your passport expires.
Overseas?
If you’re overseas when your passport expires, you can simply get a new one from your country’s consulate. There are wait times and applicable fees that must be considered.
Still at home?
Canadians who haven’t left home yet must submit their valid passport with your application for a new one. If your passport has already expired–no worries–you can use your passport as valid identification for up to one year after expiry.
Do I have to return my expired passport?
Nope, you can keep your old passport as a keepsake, but if you want a new one, you can use the old as identification. Photocopies aren’t acceptable.
If you prefer to get your new passport using snail mail, photocopies are still not acceptable. You have to include your old passport to get your new one. Visit the passport office–you can get your new passport a lot quicker with less hassles.
Note: If you are applying for the Simplified Passport Renewal Process you must enclose any Canadian passport issued to you within the last six years.
