While stand-by tickets are generally not the cheaper option they used to be, they are still useful for missed flights, earlier flights or those spur of the moment trips to destinations unknown. Five tips to help you better plan your spontaneity.

1
Call the day before to see how full the flight is.

If you travel in the middle of the week, chances are the flights will be less full, therefore more room for you!

2
Arrive EARLY for the flight you wish to leave on.

The earlier you arrive, the closer to the beginning of the list you will be. Stand by is done by first come, first serve. Speaking of early, that brings us to number three.

3
Wake up early and try to get on the first flight of the day.

Planes fill up later in the day with bumped passengers, so stand by passengers have less of a chance of getting on those flights.

4
Fly in low season.

Airlines like to overbook planes during the high seasons, so chances are there won’t empty seats for stand-byers.

5
Travel with carry on luggage only.

This way you can be placed on a number of stand-by lists, and not worry that you’re luggage is traveling before or after you. iT!
