If you are coming from Canada, be sure to check out discount websites such as flyzoom.com and Canadianaffairs.com ahead of time, to ensure that your flight to the UK is affordable. If you are looking for somewhere to study abroad in the UK, there are countless top-end universities for you to choose from.
To list the schools that are best to study at for international students, or that best accommodate international students would be impossible, as there are students studying abroad all over the UK.
I attended the University of Leicester, where they provide a two-year LLB program for students have already graduated with an Undergraduate Degree. Such a program is quite appealing to Canadian students whishing to obtain a Law Degree, as Canadian Law is based on the British Common Law system, and the accreditation process is fairly easy through the National Committee of Accreditation.
The University of Leicester also has one of the world’s most reknowned (and one of the world’s only) Museum Studies Masters program which also attracts numerous Canadians every year. One major plus about studying in the UK is that many of the schools and degrees are well recognized in Canada and the United States. The application process can be made through a central application system called UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) which is quick and easy to use, and your one application can be sent to up to five universities of your choice.
There are also many Commonwealth Scholarships that are available (yet highly competitive) to Canadian students wishing to study in another Commonwealth country. However, before electing the UK as your number one option for studying abroad, be sure to consider culture shock and cost.
With London as the second most expensive city in the world, the UK is not a cheap country to live in. In fact, travel within the UK can cost up to 35 times more than it may in some of the less expensive Eastern European countries.
If you are looking to work while you study in order to support yourself, make sure you do your research. If you are a student in the UK, you will only be allowed to work for 12 hours a week, and many jobs will pay you less than six pounds an hour. If you would like to work, try to find a job that is affiliated with your university, as they are usually higher paying and are easier to fit into your schedule.
All in all, the UK is a pretty exciting place to study, as you can be sure that you will become exposed to a vast array of cultures and traditions, while at the same time receiving a solid and well-recognized education. IT!
