Getaway to that perfect sunny utopia.
BY PHILL FELTHAM
Suntan lotion, sand in your shoes and the sun baking your soon-to-be-orange skin. Many travelers love to see the resorts and the beaches. Two popular destinations are Thailand and the Caribbean.
CARIBBEAN
Ever wonder why many Caribbean beaches are so popular (and often crowded)? The white-sand beaches with warm, clear water could be one reason and the beautiful backrop with coconut palms and craggy cliffs could be another. Sunbaths, beautiful postcard-like photographs, shell collecting or swimming: Are you getting the picture now?
Crane Beach
Barbados
This beach is perfect for scenery, pictures and swimming. Crane Beach has soft white sands which makes it comfortable to walk on. The beach is also embraced by imposing cliffs and protected by a natural coral reef. However, you can only reach this sun-beach paradise through the Crane Resort. Check out fees and accommodations before you leave.
Pink Sand Beach
Bahamas, Harbour Island
Various travel publications usually label the pink sand beach on a islet of Eleuthra Island as the world’s best beach. It’s also one of the most photographed, so if you ever come accross a Caribbean postcard, it might be the Pink Sand Beach. Pink Sand Beach gets its name from the
salmon-colored powder that stretches out for three miles. You can find places to stay just beyond the cliff behind the beach.
Placencia
Belize
This destination is four to five hours from Belize city with daily domestic flights available (but the trip is worth your while). Planciais a small town with a 16-mile sandy beach on a long, narrow peninsula in South-East Belize. You can do some scuba diving, world-class diving or snorkelling at the Ambergris Caye or at the low-key Caye Caulker. Of course, if you want to watch birds or lie in the sand, you can do that on the sandy beach too.

THAILAND
Thailand is very well-known for its beautiful beaches. If you’re flying from North America, flights might be a little expensive. However, once you’re in Thailand, accommodations and sight-seeing are a lot cheaper.
Puttaya Beach, Jomtien Beach and Kolan
Puttaya and area
This destination has two big beaches. Pattaya Beach is great for water sports, such as paragliding and jet skiing. Jomtien Beach is a quieter choice. This long, narrow beach with grainy sand can be found a little south of Pattaya. Kolan is not a part of Pattaya but its beaches have nice white sand and cleaner water and just a boat ride away.
Ao Vong Duan
Ko Samet
Ko Samet has absoloutely beautiful beaches. It’s nickname is Island with Sand Like Crushed Crystal. Fodor’s picks Ao Vong Duan because of its eye-catching half-moon bay. If it gets too
busy, there are other beaches nearby.
Haad Tong Nai Pan
Ko Pha Ngan
Fodor’s considers this beach one of Thailand’s most idyllic retreats.

HEAVENLY HAWAII
Beaches like the calm, protected shores of Kapalua, Maui and the famed Waikiki Beach on O’ahu (the beaches of Starwood Hotels & Resorts) are popular because of their water activities and safe, calm conditions. Waikiki was once the playground for Hawaiian royalty. Today the
tourists relax and get away from the world soaking in the beach’s beautiful Diamond Head. iT!
