Yes, there is a way.
Many travelers like Steve Sanoski, a journalism student at the University of Minnesota in Duluth don’t have a lot of money to travel, especially the sexy and ever expensive Europe.
EuroRail is the popular option for backpackers wanting to see much of the land, but Mr. Sanoski has an alternative.
“Like many students, I was on a tight budget on my first visit to Europe. Living in England at the time, I found a package deal through the Eurolines bus network that seemed to be what I was looking for,” he wrote in an article on TransitionsAbroad.com.
He writes that Eurolines has cheaper benefits compared with other European rail passes.
“On England’s Eurolines web site, http://www.eurolines.com/, you may see their inexpensive current rates for 15, 30 and 40 days,” he said. “My mini-pass started and ended in London, by way of Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris.”
According to Sanoski: “The advantages of traveling by train over bus include more legroom, more frequent opportunities to stand up and stretch, more destinations, and significantly more punctual schedules.”
Sanoski said that there are sleeping cars available for a good night’s sleep. He adds that time and comfort are important considerations when putting together the travel budget.
“Having sampled all three options on separate one-month trips through Europe, I would suggest you seriously consider taking a train or airplane over a bus network,” he writes. “You’ll find you have more access to Europe and more time and energy in which to explore it.”
